Kumu Māhealani Uchiyama and Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine

Māhealani Uchiyama was born and raised in Washington, DC. She has since become an award-winning dancer, musician, composer, choreographer, recording artist, author and teacher based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the director of the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance, former co-Artistic Director of the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival and is the author of two publications; The Haumāna Hula Handbook and The Mbira, An African Musical Instrument. She has produced numerous recordings of traditional Hawaiian and Tahitian music, including “Tatau” (widely used by Polynesian dance organizations) and “A Walk by the Sea”, awarded the Hawai’i Music Award for Best World Music Album of 2007. She also has recordings of mbira, “Ndoro” and “The Sky That Covers Us All”. Her most recent release is “Pasifika”. She is Kumu Hula of Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine of Berkeley, California, which has performed throughout California and internationally. Their appearances include the Hollywood Bowl, Ka ʻAha Hula ʻO Hālauaola of Hilo, Maui, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi, the Heiva celebrations of Tahiti, French Polynesia and Te Papa Tongareva, the National Museum of New Zealand. Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine has won top honors in competitions including the King Kamehameha Hula and Chant Competition of Honolulu, Kū Mai Ka Hula of Maui, and the Tahiti Fete of San Jose. The hālau is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
