I opened my first hālau, Leiānuenue, in 1983. We came in 1st in our first competition, placed in many others, and performed in the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. During these years I also came in first place as a soloist Tahitian dance at both the Merced Fete and San Francisco Tahiti Fete. By the end of the decade, I was performing Caribbean and West African dance with the Orinoco Caribbean Dancers and Drummers.
